STUDENTS BY STUDENTS” 3-6 September 2009 Athens, Greece |
> What is 4ΑrTS
The 4ArTS is a
gathering of 60-70 arts therapies students from around the world for an
intensive conference. The conference involves a combination of professional
lectures and student run workshops in art therapy, music therapy, dance therapy
and drama therapy. International students of any of these disciplines are
welcome to attend 4ArTS. The main language of all lectures and workshops will
be English with translators available where necessary.
The encounter
will include group discussions on the practical differences of how arts
therapies are practiced in different countries, the theoretical variety of arts
therapies approaches around the world, and arts performances.
> History
The first
international arts therapies student encounter took place in 2006 in Ottersberg (Germany). The
idea was conceived by Anna von Butler and Cettina Francella in 2005 when in the ECArTE*
conference in Crete (Grecce). Some students, amongst them Anna and Cettina,
organised a discussion forum representing the “student voice”. Arts Therapies
students from all over the world were involved in
lively discussions about their visions and the realities of the profession.
Some of the issues discussed were: differences in arts therapies approaches,
job prospects, the double nature of the arts therapist role (artist or
therapist?), and the relationship between theory and practice. The forum was
successful and proved the need for more…therefore the idea of an international
art therapies symposium “for students by students” was born!
The student
conference has taken place for 3 consecutive years. The first encounter was in
Germany (International Arts Therapies Summercamp, Ottersberg, 2006), the second in the Netherlands (2nd
International Arts Therapies Summercamp, Amersfoort,
2007), and the third one in Spain (3rd Arts Therapies Student
Encounter, Barcelona, 2008). All conferences were approved by ECArTE and the relevant universities of the host countries
(Fachhochschule Ottersberg,
Hogeschool Utrecht University and Metafora,
Institute for LifeLong
Learning- Universidad de Barcelona-IL3 UB.). These encounters were very
successful with up to 60-70 participants (in Barcelona). Feedback forms filled
in by participants demonstrate the success of the event and promise an even
more successful future.
The fourth
encounter is called 4ArTS (4th International Encounter for Arts
Therapies Students) and will take place in Athens (Greece). We hope this will
be a great opportunity to promote the arts therapies in our country.
